Music Therapy Program
Physical & psychological problems are common after critical illness. Long-standing problems can include muscle weakness, chronic pain, anxiety and depression.
There is evidence that early rehabilitation can help mitigate some of these consequences of needing intensive care.
Music therapy provides a potentially powerful intervention that could serve patients who are still in intensive care, but also those who have stepped down to a ward, but who are still facing a mountain to climb in relation to rehabilitation and getting home and back to their lives.
Music therapy can counter issues that patients face in relation to long-term hospitalisation, including the hospital environment, communication issues and ongoing illness.
Importantly music therapy can also benefit the families of patients who have needed intensive care and also healthcare professionals who have cared for these patients.
The Music Therapy Research program is seeking to design trial to demonstrate efficacy and effectiveness from music in the context of rehabilitation and recovery from critical illness.
